The Cisco WS-X6748-SFP is a 48-port Gigabit Ethernet SFP switch module for the Cisco Catalyst 6500 / 7600 Series chassis-based switches. It is a classic, high-density line card from the mid-2000s era, widely deployed in enterprise, campus, data center, and service provider networks for Gigabit Ethernet aggregation over fiber.

The WS-X6748-SFP is a CEF720-based (Cisco Express Forwarding) 48-port 1000BASE-X SFP module that provides 48 × 1 Gigabit Ethernet ports using SFP transceivers (Small Form-factor Pluggable). It is designed for high-performance, non-blocking Layer 2/3 switching and routing in Catalyst 6500/6500-E/7600/7600-S chassis.

Key highlights:

• All 48 ports are 1 Gigabit Ethernet only (1000BASE-X) — no 10/100/1000 copper or 10GbE support
• Uses standard SFP transceivers (1000BASE-SX, LX, ZX, T, etc.)

The Cisco WS-C3850-24T-L is a stackable, enterprise-class Layer 3 access switch from the Catalyst 3850 Series — one of Cisco's most successful fixed-configuration switches of the 2010s, widely used for campus, branch, and wiring-closet deployments.

This model is the 24-port non-PoE version with LAN Base software image (Layer 2 only, limited Layer 3 features), designed for high-density Gigabit Ethernet environments that do not require Power over Ethernet (PoE/PoE+). It is often deployed as a cost-effective wired access switch in locations where PoE devices are powered separately or not needed.

The WS-C3850-24T-L provides 24 × 10/100/1000BASE-T RJ-45 ports (full Gigabit Ethernet) plus 4 × 10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ uplink ports for high-speed fiber or copper aggregation to core/distribution layers or data center switches.

It runs Cisco LAN Base image, which includes full Layer 2 switching (VLANs, VTP, STP/RSTP/MSTP, EtherChannel, PVST+), basic Layer 3 static routing, and advanced features such as QoS, security ACLs, NetFlow Lite, IPv6, Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), and port security — but no full dynamic routing (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP) or advanced Layer 3 functions (those require IP Base or IP Services image).

The switch supports StackWise-480 technology (480 Gbps stack bandwidth), allowing up to 9 switches in a single logical stack — creating a unified system with up to 216 Gigabit ports managed through one IP address. Stacking simplifies management, enables cross-stack QoS/security policies, and provides high resiliency.

It includes Cisco StackPower capability (with optional StackPower cables and compatible PSUs), allowing power sharing across the stack for redundancy and flexibility (even though this model is non-PoE).

This model was extremely popular for pure wired Gigabit access — commonly used in offices, classrooms, labs, or branch sites where PoE was not required, or as an aggregation switch for downstream PoE switches.
